Therapeutic Massage

What is Therapeutic Massage?

Therapeutic massage can be used to remedy a specific condition that a client is experiencing.

A variety of different pressures and techniques are used, but Janna is careful to work within your own tolerance. Janna will always communicate with the client and modify her approach to your conditions and needs.

How Does It Work? Techniques

This can include deep tissue massage, but lighter techniques are also used in many cases. The stage of healing, tissue condition, and client pressure threshold all play a part in the amount of pressure that is used to address a condition.

What is the Deep Tissue Technique?

Not every situation will require deep tissue work, but Janna is able to perform the deep tissue technique when required.

With chronic muscle tension or injury, there may be adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can disrupt circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation.

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and often uses deep pressure. It is used for chronic aches and pain and contracted areas such as a stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.

Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist uses massage oil. Muscles must be relaxed in order for the therapist to reach the deeper musculature.

Some of the strokes are the same as those used in classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles).

According to Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine and over-the-counter drugs.

Deep tissue massage also received a top ranking for fibromyalgia pain. People often notice improved range of motion immediately after a deep tissue massage.

Benefits of Therapeutic Massage

Deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as chronic muscle pain, injury rehabilitation, and the following conditions:

  • Chronic pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)
  • Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Postural problems
  • Muscle tension in the hamstrings, glutes, IT band, legs, quadriceps, rhomboids, upper back
  • Osteoarthritis pain
  • Sciatica
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Tennis elbow
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle tension or spasm
  • After a workout or bodybuilding

Relaxation Therapy

What is Relaxation Massage?

Most people just don’t take enough time for themselves anymore! Relaxation massage is a smooth, gentle style of massage designed to improve circulation, range of movement, relief minor muscle pain, and promote overall relaxation. It is the most common massage that is intended to help the individual relax, due to excessive stress, anxiety or other related symptoms. The relaxation massage encompasses a smooth, flowing style that is obtained through various hand movements and pressures.

The ideal intention with a relaxation massage is to promote general comfort in the individual. It is used to decrease tension in the body, both physically and mentally.

Many live their stressful lives day to day without taking any time off just for them. Everyone deserves a well needed moment of relaxation and this massage is just the right technique for that. It will relax your mind and body, giving you a break from the stress of your life.

Massages are open to people of all ages.

How Does It Work? Techniques

The massage consists of the therapist applying gentle to medium pressure of the hands to the body, gently manipulating the tissue to promote relaxation. It is not a deep tissue massage. It is not designed for working the deeper muscles of the body, but just a gentle kneading and rubbing of the outer layers of the body tissue. It will cover a wide range of areas on the body including the back, legs, arms and neck.

This is a highly popular form of massage for those with emotional stress or anxiety, because it is believed that soothing massages help the body release endorphins and serotonin in the body.

Benefits of Relaxation Massage

This therapy may also improve your circulation, which enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscle cells and helps remove waste products or reduce swelling. These circulatory effects of massage may have value in the treatment of some inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis.

Massage therapy induces a relaxation response, which lowers your heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure; plus boosts your immune system; and generally decreases the physical effects of stress.

Relaxation massage benefits the following conditions:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • General well-being
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Arthritis
  • Low Immunity

Prenatal Therapy

What is Prenatal Massage?

Massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care. It is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and edema (or swelling).

In addition, massage for pregnant women reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax nervous tension — which aids in better sleep — and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.

What Happens During The Prenatal Massage? Techniques

At Neurofitness Wellness Center, our RMT Janna Holtz, takes extra care to ensure our pregnancy massage clients are comfortable. Sideline positioning with supportive, soft cushions is used to alleviate the extra strain on the lower back and pelvic areas when the pressure of massage techniques are applied. Extra strain in these areas can cause unnecessary back or abdominal pain, so naturally we want to avoid any potential discomfort.

Our RMT focuses in prenatal techniques and knows how to position you safely and prevent strain to the uterine ligaments.

Relief of Everyday Symptoms

Massage for pregnant women offers a number of benefits, and it’s always a good idea to discuss with your therapist any everyday symptoms you’d like to see relieved. Those might include:

  • Headaches can be relieved by massage focusing on the head, neck and shoulders. In addition, maintaining optimal levels of stress relief through massage reduces the chances of migraines or tension headaches by relaxing trigger points and muscle spasms.
  • Muscle tension created by carrying the extra weight of a baby can be relieved by encouraging blood flow to the afflicted areas. This provides more nutrient-rich oxygen and also increases the flow of lymphatic fluid, which sweeps away toxins and metabolic waste.
  • Reduced back pain
  • Reduced joint pain
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
  • Fatigue, leg cramps and swelling/edema can all be relieved through various types of massage for pregnant women.
  • The ordinary aches and pains of pregnancy are countered by the release of serotonin, your body’s natural anti-pain chemical, which is stimulated by massage.

While a massage can’t promise that your newborn will sleep through the night, it can provide you with a better night’s sleep both during pregnancy and afterwards. Regular massage therapy not only helps diminish anxiety and discomfort but boosts relaxation as well. This ultimately can lead to improved sleep patterns.

In addition, the serotonin, endorphins and dopamine released by your body in response to massage provide an extra helping of those natural chemicals. This is effective in increasing deep sleep.

Staying Healthy

Women with normal, low-risk pregnancies can benefit greatly from the variety of massage techniques offered by our professional massage therapist. However, women in high-risk pregnancies should consult their doctor or midwife before beginning one of our massage therapy programs. If you experience discomfort at any time during the pregnancy massage, tell your therapist immediately.

Women who have recently experienced bleeding, pre-term contractions, or have any of the following conditions should speak with a healthcare provider prior to receiving a massage:

  • High risk pregnancy
  • Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH)
  • Preeclampsia
  • Previous pre-term labor
  • Experiencing severe swelling, high blood pressure, or sudden, severe headaches
  • Recently gave birth
